Former Butler Snow Partner Jay A. Travis III Passes Away

Jay A. Travis III, a former long-time partner at Butler Snow, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 10 in Jackson, Miss.

Jay earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi, magna cum laude, and his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from the University of Mississippi School of Law, where he served as Editor in Chief of the Mississippi Law Journal. Upon graduation, Jay served in the U.S. Army until 1968 when he returned to Mississippi. Shortly after his return, he joined Butler, Snow, O’Mara, Stevens & Cannada where he practiced estate planning, fiduciary litigation and estate administration law for more than 40 years. He is known for helping to establish the firm’s art collection and for playing Santa Claus at the firm’s annual holiday party. Jay retired from the firm in 2011.

Jay was a member of several national and Mississippi Bar organizations and served in various leadership roles throughout the years. He was listed in the inaugural publication of The Best Lawyers in America® when it was first published in 1983 and remained on the list until his retirement in 2011. He was also listed as a Mid-South Super Lawyer®. Jay was a passionate Ole Miss fan, having served as President of the Ole Miss Law Alumni and always cheering for his team.

Jay is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judith, and their three children (Kathy, John and William) and seven grandchildren.

Service Details

A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Cathedral. Visitation with the family will begin at 10 a.m. in the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jay A. Travis, III Law Scholarship Endowment at the University of Mississippi, the MIND Center at UMMC or St. Andrew’s Episcopal Cathedral in Jackson.
