Four Attorneys Join Butler Snow’s Richmond Office

Butler Snow LLP is pleased to announce that four attorneys have joined the firm’s Richmond office. Theodore (Ted) I. Brenner, Alexander (Alex) S. de Witt, Joel W. Morgan and Anna E. (Beth) Gould will all practice in Butler Snow’s Tort, Transportation and Specialized Litigation group, where they will represent clients in a full range of insurance litigation services.

Ted Brenner joins Butler Snow with over 40 years of award-winning litigation experience across trial and appellate matters, insurance disputes and more. Brenner has been recognized as one of the Best Lawyers in America® since 2012 and awarded Lawyer of the Year four times for his insurance law practice. He has also received the highest recognition of AV® Preeminent™ under the Martindale-Hubbell® Rating System and has been recognized by the Virginia Super Lawyers multiple times for his Insurance Coverage, Civil Litigation and Alternative Dispute Resolution practice.

Brenner earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond School of Law, where he was a member of the University of Richmond Law Review. He has been a faculty member of professionalism courses required of all law students and newly admitted lawyers by the Virginia State Bar. He is a Fellow of the American Bar Association Foundation and a Senior Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America. He was formerly Chairman of the Virginia State Bar Third District Disciplinary Committee and the Richmond Bar Association Judiciary Committee.

Alex de Witt joins the firm with vast experience in insurance law, flood litigation, trial and appellate practice, personal injury defense and more. Having received the highest recognition under the Martindale-Hubbell® Rating System as AV® Preeminent™, de Witt also earned Rising Star recognitions from Virginia Super Lawyers three years in a row and has authored multiple legal articles regarding insurance law, insurance bad faith litigation and trial practice.

de Witt earned his Juris Doctor at George Mason University and is a member of the Virginia State Bar, where he served on the Third District Disciplinary Committee for six years. He also served as chair and vice chair of the Policy Coverage Section and chair of the Legislative Committee of the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys. de Witt also volunteers with the Central Virginia Legal Aid Society/Virginia Bar Association Pro Bono Hotline.

Joel Morgan joins the firm’s Richmond office with first chair trial experience and an extensive background in personal injury defense, flood insurance litigation and more. He has been recognized as a Rising Star by Virginia Super Lawyers multiple times and earned the award for Significant Service from the Virginia State Bar Young Lawyers Conference in 2012.

Morgan earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond School of Law, where he graduated with cum laude honors. He served as the articles editor of the Law Review and as president of the Trial Advocacy Board.

Beth Gould joins Butler Snow’s Tort, Transportation and Specialized Litigation practice with litigation and insurance experience in the trucking, commercial general liability, restaurant and retail industries. Gould was named a Rising Star in Civil Litigation in the Defense category by Virginia Super Lawyers in 2022.

After earning her Bachelor of Arts at Dartmouth College, she earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond School of Law, where she served as a senior staff member of the Richmond Journal of Law and Technology. Gould has spoken at multiple seminars and published commentary in legal newsletters.

Butler Snow’s Tort, Transportation and Specialized Litigation group practices across a variety of industries and practice areas, representing companies in a broad range of industries, including financial institutions, manufacturers, retailers and professional services. The group also works with self-insured clients, companies defending litigation under a large SIR, and major insurers and claim administration companies. The group advocates for and counsels public and private clients on complex litigation matters, including trucking and automobile accident cases, commercial and industrial premises liability, workplace accidents and exposure claims, medical and other professional negligence, alleged business and consumer fraud, breach of warranty or lemon law claims and much more. Along with providing specialized expertise to clients, attorneys and advisors have represented clients before state agencies and regulatory bodies.
