Butler Snow LLP is pleased to welcome attorney J.R. Johnson to the firm’s Austin office as a member of the Specialized Advocacy practice group. Johnson brings over 15 years of private and public sector experience in commercial litigation and government affairs, including his most recent role as Executive Director of the Texas Ethics Commission.

In the private sector, Johnson has practiced in federal and state courts across the country, representing plaintiffs and defendants in disputes involving intellectual property, contracts, fiduciary duties, securities, and regulatory matters. His clients have included financial institutions, hardware and software designers, industrial manufacturers, and energy companies.
In the public sector, Johnson served as both the Executive Director and General Counsel of the Texas Ethics Commission (“TEC”), a state agency that enforces Texas’ campaign finance, lobby, and other anti-corruption laws. While there, he also led the TEC’s legislative affairs and served as chief counsel to the TEC’s appointed governing board.
