Butler Snow Attorney Eric Hudson to speak at the Judicial Symposium on Scientific Methodology, Expert Testimony, and the Judicial Role

Butler Snow attorney Eric Hudson is serving as a presenter at the Judicial Symposium on Scientific Methodology, Expert Testimony, and the Judicial Role, a national judicial education program sponsored by the Law and Economics Center at the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University. Held in Nashville, Tennessee, the symposium brings together judges, legal scholars, and practitioners to examine the role of science and expert testimony in the courtroom.

Hudson will present on judicial gatekeeping in the application of Federal Rule of Evidence 702, which governs the admissibility of expert testimony. The session will focus on the trial judge’s critical responsibility to evaluate the reliability and relevance of expert evidence before it is presented to a jury.

Designed to enhance scientific literacy on the bench, the symposium provides judges with a deeper understanding of the tools and techniques used by expert witnesses. Through lectures, panel discussions, and applied case studies, the program explores topics such as the scientific method, statistics, toxicology, epidemiology, and the intersection of science and law, with a particular emphasis on the judiciary’s gatekeeping function.

Eric Hudson

Hudson focuses his practice on the defense of complex mass tort litigation for pharmaceutical, medical device, and other product manufacturers. With more than 25 years of experience, he has handled all phases of mass tort and product liability matters, including discovery, expert development, motion practice, trials, and settlement. Hudson has served as lead counsel in nationwide multidistrict litigations and as national coordinating counsel in state and federal proceedings across the United States, and he regularly advises clients on strategic litigation management and settlement administration, including international matters. He is also a Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 31–listed general civil mediator.

Hudson is widely recognized for his work in product liability and mass tort litigation. He is ranked in BL Rankings, The Best Lawyers in America® for Product Liability Litigation – Defendants and Commercial Litigation, and he has been recognized by The Legal 500 US as a key lawyer in nationwide product liability, mass tort, and class action defense for pharmaceuticals and medical devices. He is also listed in Thomson Reuters Super Lawyers® and holds an AV® Preeminent™ Peer Review Rating from Martindale‑Hubbell®. His professional honors include the Tennessee Bar Association’s Leadership Law Award and selection by Memphis Business Journal as a Top 40 Under 40 honoree.

Hudson earned his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from Vermont Law School, where he served as Head Notes Editor of the Vermont Law Review. He also holds multiple degrees in biology, including a master’s degree from the University of South Florida and a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University. He is admitted to practice in Tennessee and Vermont, as well as multiple U.S. District Courts, U.S. Courts of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
