Environmental Counseling

Butler Snow’s Environmental Counseling Group is recognized for the comprehensive knowledge, experience and contact base available to serve our clients. With the team’s combined years of environmental experience, we have an unparalleled level of expertise in the regulatory arena. In addition to our extensive geographical reach, our firm is Mississippi’s largest environmental law practice, with a proven record of helping both businesses and government address environmental needs.

We provide counseling and representation on a wide range of environmental matters, including:

LEGISLATION

Our attorneys regularly interact with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and states’ Department of Environmental Quality, maintaining close relationships with other regulatory decision-makers at the federal, state and local levels. At the state legislative level, our attorneys are actively involved in drafting, monitoring and influencing pending environmental legislation.

REGULATORY PERMITTING

We provide environmental permitting assistance at both the state and federal levels in the areas of air and water quality, water supply (surface water and groundwater withdrawals), energy (permitting issues for proposed new merchant power plants) and waste. Recognizing that the permitting process often involves both technical and political discussions, we work closely with our clients to develop a successful strategy to address both needs.

ENFORCEMENT AND LITIGATION

We know that environmental enforcement and litigation can be costly and disruptive. With this in mind, our team ensures that clients are well positioned to obtain the best result at the lowest cost. We provide litigation services in matters related to government regulatory enforcement, third-party liability and cost-recovery claims, and toxic torts.

RESPONSE STRATEGIES

In this constantly changing climate, it is more important than ever for our clients to prepare and protect against unexpected environmental issues. We assist our clients in preparing for chemical releases and exposures, crisis management and reporting and notification obligations. Our attorneys recognize the need to develop new strategies and alternative methods for solving environmental issues both promptly and efficiently.
