Butler Snow Announces Two New Hires

Butler, Snow, O’Mara, Stevens & Cannada, PLLC, has hired James P. Stanzell and Van D. Turner, Jr. for their Memphis, Tenn. office. Butler Snow also has offices in Jackson, Miss., Gulfport, Miss., and Bethlehem, Pa.

“Jim and Van are exceptional lawyers who bring considerable value to our practice groups,” said Randall D. Noel, Chair of the Litigation Department at Butler Snow. “Each has unique experience that will benefit our clients, especially as new regulatory policies and legislation are considered on the federal level.”

Stanzell will focus on Healthcare Law, Regulatory Compliance Counsel and Advice, as well as Government and Internal Investigations. Most recently, Stanzell served as Assistant General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer for the largest nonprofit rural healthcare system in the United States. He also served as in-house counsel for a nonprofit parent organization operating more than 300 beds, a behavioral health facility, retirement village, home health agency and several primary care clinics.

Stanzell received a Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Corporate Compliance from George Washington University and an LL.M. degree in Taxation from Washington University. He also received his J.D. from St. Louis University and B.A in Political Science from the University of Arkansas.

Turner will focus on Labor and Employment Law, Education Law, and Public Law and Finance for Butler Snow and was recently named to the “Top 40 Under 40” by the Memphis Business Journal in 2007. Turner previously served as Associate General Counsel for Memphis City Schools, the 23rd largest school district in the nation and the largest school district in Tennessee operating approximately 209 schools and employing more than 15,000 employees.  Turner also serves as an Adjunct Professor for the University of Memphis, Humphreys School of Law. He has defended several employment law cases brought against public and private corporations ranging from EEOC Complaints to federal jury trials.

Turner received his J.D. from the University of Tennessee and graduated magna cum laude from Morehouse College with a B.A. in English and Linguistics. He also served as Research Editor for Tennessee Law Review and Articles Editor for Transactions: Tennessee Journal of Business Law.

Bob Frey A Featured Author in The Mississippi Lawyer

Butler Snow Attorney Robert M. Frey was featured recently in The Mississippi Lawyer, a publication of the Mississippi Bar.  His article, titled Improper Closing Argument in Civil Trial: A Trial Notebook Summary of Mississippi Case Law can be downloaded by clicking here.  Frey is a member of the firm's Appellate and Written Advocacy Group where he focuses his practice in the areas of insurance sales practices, claims-handling and coverage, commercial dispute resolution and litigation, and federal jurisdiction.


Nealey Contributes to MDLA Quarterly

Butler Snow Attorney LeAnn W. Nealey recently authored an article for the MDLA Quarterly, a publication of the Mississippi Defense Lawyers Association (MDLA), titled "Preserving Summary Judgment Based on the Exclusion of Expert Testimony."  Nealey is a member of the firm's Appellate and Written Advocacy Group where she focuses her practice on appellate advocacy, product liability and environmental law.
