Butler Snow Redesigns and Expands Unique Health Oriented Group
Butler Snow, recognized as one of the top law firms in the nation, announced today the formation of its Pharmaceutical, Medical Device and Healthcare Industry Group. The group is comprised of two major sections handling business and litigation cases. The firm has an extensive track record in representing clients on a national and regional level, and in recent years has assembled a team of more than 50 multi-disciplinary attorneys who provide creative solutions for addressing issues in the complex healthcare industry. This group includes product liability and commercial litigators; corporate, commercial and transaction attorneys; labor and employment attorneys, and those experienced in government investigations. The group will be co-chaired by Christy D. Jones and Charles F. Johnson III, who have worked to grow Butler Snow’s expertise in the healthcare industry. Jones, a veteran trial lawyer, was recently named by Chambers USA as one of the top seven product liability attorneys in the country, is included as one of only five recognized pharmaceutical lawyer’s in the country, and has served as lead counsel on major pharmaceutical and medical device cases from California to New Jersey. Johnson has over 30 years experience handling corporate and commercial matters for a variety of businesses, with a focus on the healthcare industry for the last 10 years. He currently serves as general counsel to a national physician practice management and ambulatory surgery company headquartered in Chicago. “We’ve devoted years to cultivating a team that knows healthcare from every angle,” Jones said. “To serve these types of clients, a firm must have the experience and talent to anticipate and address the many challenges posed by an ever-changing healthcare industry, as well as the support and resources to mount a best defense. The fact that this will be one of just three major practice groups at our firm indicates our commitment, and illustrates that we know clients need an array of legal services.” The group is backed by a full-service firm with more than 150 attorneys representing regional, national and international clients from locations in Jackson, Mississippi; Memphis, Tennessee; Gulfport, Mississippi; and Greater Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Memphis office, which began in 1998 as a specialized healthcare compliance practice, has expanded to 40 attorneys. Over half the attorneys in that group are members of this newly-formed group. “The firm’s longstanding, successful products liability litigation history, combined with a trend among Fortune 1000 companies to decrease the number of outside firms that they use to generally fewer than 20 firms has clearly worked in our favor,” said Johnson. “We have been chosen by four of these companies to provide a broad array of business services on a national basis in addition to the firm’s traditional products liability defense work.” “We have been meeting the needs of clients in this industry for many years, so it made sense for us to formally create a group focused on pharmaceutical and healthcare work,” said Johnson. “Our team of attorneys clearly understands the needs and complexities of the healthcare industry, whether that is pharmaceutical companies or large hospital networks needing labor and employment expertise. Formally organizing this division will help us serve our growing client needs.” Butler Snow, based in Jackson, Mississippi, has served as lead counsel in a number of regional and national cases. Jones served as co-counsel for Merck & Co. in a battle stemming from the use of Vioxx, Merck’s blockbuster drug that resulted in its first defense verdict. Not only did she try the Merck case, but also the first breast implant case resulting in a defense verdict. Butler Snow’s trial attorneys have managed thousands of product liability, medical negligence and mass tort cases across the country. The BTI Client Relationship Scorecard for Law Firms rated Butler Snow as one of the law firms most recommended by legal decision-makers in the pharmaceutical industry. Butler Snow’s pharmaceutical, medical device and healthcare industry department draws on its expertise in products liability, professional liability, commercial litigation, government investigations, compliance, transactions, finance, intellectual property, real estate, tax, labor and employment.
