Butler Snow Team Focuses On White-Collar Criminal Defense

Responding to the needs of clients, Butler Snow has created a practice group in the area of government investigations and white-collar crime. Attorneys in the practice include several former federal and state prosecutors.

Butler Snow has for years served clients facing such investigations, but the current legal environment led to the creation of the team. By focusing our resources on this area, we can continue to deliver the high standard of experience and service our clients need,¨ said Don Clark, Chair of Butler Snow.

The firm's Government Investigations and White Collar Crime Group focuses on white-collar criminal defense in the state and federal arenas. In addition to federal and state tax-fraud cases, the practice deals with securities fraud, government contract fraud, mail fraud, conspiracy, criminal contempt, money laundering, RICO violations and Medicare/Medicaid fraud. Attorneys also represent witnesses before federal and state grand juries and administrative agencies.

James Tucker, leader of the practice group, is a former U.S. Attorney and Criminal Chief U.S. Attorney with more than 30 years in the U.S. Justice Department. Ours is not a high-profile, headline-seeking practice,¨ Tucker said. We try to serve our clients quietly during the investigative phase. But, if necessary, we're prepared for further proceedings.

Members of the group, along with attorneys from other practice areas, are part of Butler Snow's Corporate Integrity Practice Team, which provides businesses with counsel about criminal law, corporate integrity and compliance, fraud detection, corporate governance, and independent internal investigations of allegations of wrongdoing. Tucker coordinates these investigations.

Other members of Butler Snow's Government Investigations and White Collar Crime Group are:

  • Bob Anderson, the newest member of the group, a former Asst. U.S. Attorney who served 10 years as Health Care Fraud Prosecutor.
  • Peter Barrett, with 22 years' experience as an Asst. U.S. Attorney.
  • Ken Turner, with 16 years as District Attorney for the Eighth Circuit Court District of Mississippi.
  • Amanda Barbour, a former Asst. District Attorney and Deputy District Attorney.
