Boston – Anita Modak-Truran, an attorney with Butler, Snow, O’Mara, Stevens & Cannada, PLLC (Butler Snow), joined an elite group of women in leadership positions throughout the globe for the 2007 “Women and Power: Leadership in a New World” program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. “This program allowed me to step back from my day-to-day responsibilities and focus on improving my leadership, problem solving, and communication skills,” Modak-Truran said. “The best part of the program was the interaction with a broad cross section of women executives and officials.” Also attending were Linda Mason, Senior Vice President of CBS News; Susie Hargreaves, Director of CultureWorks UK; Renee Levow, Senior Vice President of Smith Barney; Karen Sexton, Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Texas Medical Branch; Judith Starr, General Counsel of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp.; Valerie Van Meter, Vice President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago; and Margaret Traub, President and Chief Executive Officer of Adesso, Inc. Other participants included DeDe Lea, Executive Vice President Viacom Inc.; Kathleen Ellis, Senior Vice President Corporate Affairs for New Jersey Resources Corporation; Ekwau Ibi Florence, Member of the Ugandan Parliament; Robin Douthitt, Dean of the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Candy S. Hill, Senior Vice-President of Social Policy & Government Affairs for Catholic Charities; and the Honorable Joanne M. Massiah, Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Marine Resources and Agro-Industry for Antigua and Barbuda. The weeklong program helps women executives move into positions of greater leadership, power, and influence. Using the Harvard case study method, participants and Harvard faculty members examined leadership challenges faced by individuals and organizations and learned to apply the lessons to their professional situations. Admission to the “Women and Power” program is extremely competitive, with criteria for selection including the applicant’s current level of responsibility, size of budget directly managed, and potential for future contributions to their community and organization.
