Who Says It's Not Easy Being Green?

Our unwavering commitment to our clients extends to the preservation of the environment in which we practice. The changing aspects of our global climate impact every facet of our business and your business, from daily operations to projected business goals. In order to achieve environmental stability, we must all do our part.

Butler Snow has adopted and implemented “green” concepts across all of our operations and service delivery. Our goal is to create a safe, pleasant, productive workplace and lead by example to demonstrate responsible corporate citizenship. Though our commitment is an ongoing one,

Building on a Philosophy
Each firm office participates in a recycling program for paper, plastics and other materials used throughout our offices. All employees of the firm are educated in the importance of recycling and are encouraged to do their part to reduce waste produced by the firm as a whole.

When the firm began drafting plans for the renovation of our Memphis office, we made a commitment to “go green” under Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)* standards, working with contractors to explore the use of recycled materials, organic compound (VOC) paints and stains, water-conserving fixtures, lower energy fluorescent lights and more efficient HVAC systems. Upon completion of those renovations in 2007, Butler Snow became the first LEED-certified law firm in the southeastern United States.
With construction of a new Central Mississippi office underway, we are excited that we’ll call a LEED Silver Certified building – the first LEED certified high-rise office building in the state of Mississippi – our new home. The firm will occupy four floors in Renaissance 200, set to open in late 2009 in the Renaissance at Colony Park development. The building is designed to minimize energy use and environmental impact, with energy-conserving lighting systems, use of natural light, low-water-use hardware and natural materials. The area surrounding 200 Renaissance will incorporate bicycle trails and racks to encourage employees to use alternate modes of transportation to and from the office.

End of a Paper Trail
Butler Snow is a pioneer in the introduction of electronic document management to the practice of law. Electronic workflow processes include everything from opening a legal matter to a check request. Paperless transactions not only benefit the environment by preventing unnecessary waste, they benefit our clients, who are able to access documents anywhere, anytime. Electronic measures include:

  • Storage of matter files electronically
  • Distribution of reports electronically
  • Electronic access of all training materials
  • Electronic maintenance of Human Resource records
  • Use of Computer-based training material

Power of Green
Butler Snow’s IT Department is committed to green initiatives in managing data:

  • Reduction of servers through server virtualization
  • Consolidation of data storage reducing the number of hard drives needed
  • Maximization of servers by dynamically moving processes to under-utilized hardware throughout the day while still servicing the needs of users
  • Design of data centers with state-of-the-art cooling systems that use less power

Our IT technicians are devoted to excelling as technology thought leaders. We are constantly searching for ways to improve our efficiency through the use of technology.

* LEED is a third-party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings and interior space.
